Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

On this page you will find answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program. If your question is not answered here, please contact our Scholarship Coordinator by email at

  1. I am a high school graduate from Chile planning to study in the USA. I would like to know if I am eligible for the scholarship, or if it is only open to US Citizens. International students possessing the appropriate documentation to study within the United States are eligible for the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program. Please submit an application on our website ( before the published deadline.
  2. Where should all of my materials be sent to so that I can be considered for your scholarship? Please submit an application on our website ( before the published deadline.
  3. I am currently a freshman and am looking to apply for the 2015 Fall Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Award. The deadline for this award's applications is well before my enrollment for my sophomore year and well before my classes. So while I am an incoming freshman and will be when I apply I am not sure if the term freshman only applies for those who would be getting ready to enroll for their freshman year. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Please submit an application under the “sophomore, junior, and senior” category (sophomore in your case), that will fit your enrollment for the starting year of the scholarship, in this case, Fall 2015. The scholarship committee understands that students may not have updated GPAs or class schedules for the Fall 2015 semester by the deadline. This will be taken into consideration when reviewing your application.
  4. Is this scholarship available to graduating high school seniors or only to students currently enrolled in college? The scholarship is open to any student that will be attending an accredited university or college in the Fall 2015 semester. This can be full-time or part-time students.
  5. As I have not started college yet, and will have a high school transcript only, no college transcript. Is there anything I should substitute for the college transcript? Also, do I need to wait for my final transcript to apply, or is it better to wait until then? We do not require transcripts for the application process. Our scholarship committee does not review applications until after the deadline so there is no rush to fill out an application.

If awarded a scholarship you will be required to submit transcript information. Since you will be an incoming freshman, we ask that you send us an unofficial copy of your high school transcript and the acceptance letter to your chosen university. If you have already selected your classes for the fall semester, we kindly ask that you also submit this information.
  6. I am a graduate student entering the candidacy stage of my PhD program. During the award period of the Pierce Scholarship, I will be completing my research and dissertation. With my course credits completed and my tuition bill very small, I need funding to live on (a stipend). Neither my University nor advisor have funding for PhD students completing their degree. Can this scholarship be used to pay students a stipend? The award money is sent directly to the award winner‘s college or university, who will then determine how the money can be used. I advise that you speak with your financial aid department to determine how they will dispense the award money.
  7. I will not have an undergraduate GPA score since in Europe GPAs are not determined. I will however have a translated form of my undergraduate transcript with the explanation of the grading system. Will that be accepted with my application? A translated form of your undergraduate transcript with the explanation of the grading system will be fine for the application process. If you’re selected as an award winner, we will need for you to submit an official copy of your transcript in its original form.
  8. I am writing to find out if there are any specifics for the Letter of Recommendations? How many are needed? The scholarship committee is looking for well-rounded students with a passion for science. Any positive remarks about your passions, personality, commitments, and work ethic will benefit your application. There are no limitations for letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf. They can be attached to your application, emailed to, or mailed to:

    Thermo Fisher Scientific
    Attn: Scholarship Reference
    3747 N. Meridian Rd
    Rockford, IL 61101
  9. I will just start to be a graduate student in the Fall semester of 2015. In the application, one of the required fields is Graduate School GPA. What should I put in that field? Moreover, I will be attending a graduate school that does pass/fail grading. Students should apply under the application that fits their enrollment for the Fall 2015 semester. Since you will be a graduate student, please apply under this category. Please write “N/A” in the GPA field. The scholarship committee understands that students will not have updated GPAs or class schedules for the Fall 2015 semester by the deadline. This will be taken into consideration when reviewing applications. If you’re selected as an award winner, we will review your official transcript that is “pass/fail.”
  10. I would like to know whether the Pierce Scholarship is decided on a rolling basis, and what are the components you are looking for that would be a strong candidate for the scholarship. The Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program is not awarded on a rolling basis. All applications are reviewed after the published deadline. The scholarship committee is looking for well-rounded students with a passion for science.
  11. I'd like to apply for the Pierce Scholarship and was wondering if the application materials submitted are kept confidential, as I wanted to upload some submitted but unpublished work. Thank you for your time. Yes, the application materials are kept confidential. Only the scholarship committee sees the application material and information is kept confidential among them.
  12. I'm a graduate student at the University of California, Davis. I wanted to ask whether Pierce or Thermo Fisher Scientific has any rules against students receiving the Pierce Scholarship at the same time that they are receiving other scholarship money or a school-related salary. For example, if I received $5000 for the Fall 2015 Pierce Scholarship, it would be enough to cover my fall tuition. Could I then also be paid as a research assistant or through other scholarship money that I've been awarded by my department? The winners of the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship are awarded based on merit, not financial need. We have no official rules stating that the winners cannot have other sources of financial aid, such as scholarships or work study
  13. I am currently working on a research project that I would like to submit an abstract for supporting materials in lieu of a poster for this scholarship. Approximately how long should I make this abstract? Your abstract should be no more than 5 pages.

The submission deadline of 11:59 PM on July 27, 2015 has passed, and we are no longer accepting application submissions.

We will announce our winners by 9:00 AM on August 17, 2015, so please check back.
